Overview

The Taxes Calculator is available to help you estimate how much you may owe in taxes when you sell your ESPP shares. It takes in all of the inputs from a contribution, as well as tax rates, and allows you to adjust how many shares you sell and at what price to determine the following:

  • How much should you expect to owe in taxes when you sell?

  • Would it be beneficial to wait to sell based on qualified sale vs disqualified sale or short-term vs long-term gain.

Inputs

Stock Symbol: The stock symbol of the company that is offering the ESPP.

Offering Date: The date at which the offering period began.

Purchase Date: The date at which the offering period ended and the shares were purchased.

Offering Date FMV: The stock price of the company on the offering date. The calculator will attempt to provide the amount based on the stock symbol and offering date which you can click to auto-fill the input.

Purchase Date FMV: The stock price of the company on the purchase date. The calculator will attempt to provide the amount based on the stock symbol and purchase date which you can click to auto-fill the input.

Purchase Price: The actual price paid per share. This should be the Purchase Date FMV with any discount applied.

Total Share Count: The number of shares purchased on the purchase date.

Ordinary Tax Rate: The rate at which your ordinary income is taxed. The current brackets are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37% depending on how much income you make. You can also add your state income tax rate to be more accurate.

Long Term Tax Rate: The rate at which your long term capital gains are taxed. The current rates are 0%, 15%, and 20% depending on how much income you make. You can also add your state income tax rate to be more accurate.
